The Different Uses of Rainwater
Rainwater can be used in many different tasks and household chores. The different applications of rainwater are highlighted below.
- Cooking and drinking.
It may be hard to believe, but the rain that falls these days can be made safe for consumption through a number of methods. These are filtration, simple water treatments, cleaning the catchment area on a regular basis, and having the catchment area made from suitable material in the first place.
The best material to use to build the catchment (for a system that should collect rain that’s ready for consumption or used for cooking) would be unpainted stainless steel. Unpainted stainless steel does not have components that can do harm to your family and pets in the long term.
- Laundry and bathing.
Rainwater that’s safe for drinking and cooking is automatically safe for use in bathing and the laundry room. For this reason, you can just follow the methods of making water safe to consume, which are mentioned above, if you’re looking to use rainwater in bathing and doing the laundry.
- Flushing the toilet.
As long as rainwater is properly filtered, it can be used for toilet flushing. To flush the toilet with filtered rainwater, fill a bucket with the stored rain, then pour the contents straight to the bowl when you need to.
- Watering outdoor and indoor plants.
Use properly filtered rainwater to water the plants in your garden and you can expect them to grow healthy and capable of producing many flowers and/or fruits.
- Composting.
In order for a compost pile to properly decompose, its important that it be watered on the regular, as though plants are already growing over it. Although tap water works for the said purpose, rainwater is rich in the nutrients that plants need, and by pouring it on soil, any plants that will be grown on that patch of soil will end up growing healthy.
- For pets, livestock, or wildlife.
Properly filtered rainwater is safe for wildlife and pets to consume. They can be poured on troughs, birdbaths, and other animal feeding containers.
- A wide array of water features like outdoor ponds and fountains.
In order to truly enjoy the water feature in your home, you’ll need to fill it with several litres of water. Tap water will do, but you are definitely better off with properly filtered rainwater, as it is free.
- Vegetable rinsing.
Clean rainwater can be used to rinse vegetables from the garden, especially root crops. To use rainwater for this task, fill a big bucket with clean rainwater, add in the vegetables and root crops, then swish them all together to remove all the soil.
- Fire protection.
A rainwater collection system that features a big storage tank can give additional protection if you happen to be living in a place that’s prone to wildfires. However, this is only true if you purchase one of the many pumps we offer.
What You Should Know About Rainwater Pumps
Almost all rainwater harvesting systems operating in Australia these days have pumps. Pumping systems can be set up on rainwater harvesting tanks to increase the pressure of the flow of water to other parts of the home, and they will need to be set up in case a household has appliances that will not work unless the water pressure is high enough.
Types
There are two main types of rainwater pumps—external pump and submersible or in-tank pump. The former type is one that should be set up outside, and the latter type should be installed inside the water tank. Each type has its advantages.
Why get a surface pump?
Get a surface pump if you’re looking for a low-cost option that isn’t difficult to maintain.
Why get a submersible or in-tank pump?
Get a submersible or in-tank water pump if you are looking for a noiseless option that does not need a lot of protection.
To-do’s Before Purchase
Before getting a pump from us, make sure to have an electrician set up a weatherproof power point near the spot where the pump needs to be. Pumps should never be connected to an extension cord, which is then connected to an interior power point. Keep in mind that the extension cord itself may not be weatherproof, and thus will be unsafe for outdoor use.
Installation
Many pump models are not that hard to set up. External pumps need a short piece of hose (that’s resistant to kinks) that’s secured with a couple of hose clamps to connect your tank to the pump inlet. The distance between the pump and tank must be reasonably short. Next, prime your pump with some water, plug it into the outlet, then switch on. Don’t forget the housing over the external pump so the elements won’t end up destroying it.
For submersible pumps, all you have to do is to connect the outlet and the garden hose before lowering your pump into the tank interior, and then plugging it into your power supply. If your pump is intended to supply water to other parts of the home, like the toilet, get a powerful pump model, which should then be connected to your house’s plumbing system.
