Contrary to what many people might think, rainwater harvesting is not just a recent trend. It is not just a product of these recent times when society, in general, has become a lot more aware of environmental issues. Believe it or not, the practice of collecting rainwater has a long history that goes back to as much as a thousand years, back when people first learned how to farm the earth and find ways of irrigating their crops. In territories with hotter climates, catching and gathering rainfall even meant the difference between the thriving and the collapsing of societies.
But as centuries passed and technology became more advanced, this need to conserve rainwater became less and less urgent as people discovered the convenience of modern inventions like plumbing. Suddenly, households had instant access to water, and they no longer had to store water from rainfall and from bodies of water in large containers.
However, in recent decades, with climate change becoming an issue of critical importance, households—and even businesses—have again looked to this ancient and essential practice.
What was rainwater harvesting like in ancient times?
The Indus Valley Civilization, which was a civilization that prospered during the Bronze Age, had a harvesting system that was more advanced than we would think. For instance, they would cut huge vats into rock formations as a means to collect water during torrential rainfall. Some of these vats can still be found today, and some are even still being used.
The Roman Empire, on the other hand, treated rainwater collection as both an art and a science. They were experts at developing advanced tools and facilities to collect rainwater for the irrigation of their crops and for use in their households. One of their most impressive inventions is a construction that was used back in their times to collect rainwater from streets. It can be found in the Sunken Palace in Istanbul and is so huge that you would have to use a boat to explore it. In the 1700s, the island of Malta built something similar in the form of an aqueduct that collected rainwater and distributed it to its population. It was one of the earliest forms of the modern-day plumbing system that we now take advantage of today.
In later centuries, people invented new ways of supplying water through reservoirs and pipes, and so the practice of harvesting rainwater slowly faded away. With the advent of technology and more progressive and urbanized practices, rainwater catchment became less of a concern, except for countries with hot climates and a shortage of water supply.
In the last few decades, we have seen a resurgence in rainwater collecting, with households and establishments now actively incorporating it into their everyday routines. There’s no doubt that the pressing issue of climate change is one of the main causes of this resurgence as more and more people are starting to show more concern for the environment. Economic factors could also be another reason. With prices of utilities steadily going up, people are looking into the usage of a free resource—rainwater—so they can save on their monthly water bills. In other words, rainwater harvesting does not only have ecological benefits; it has economic benefits too.
The collected rainwater can be used for various purposes. You can use it to wash clothes, flush the toilets, and even clean your car and driveway. Moreover, you can use it to water your garden, as gardening experts have revealed that rainwater is a better option than municipal water; the former is pure and contains no hard minerals, which can affect the growth of your plants. You can even drink it, provided you filter it first as you would want to get rid of any particles. Rainwater is pure water, but you never know what kind of particles it might have encountered on its way down.
- By harvesting surface runoff – This method is used primarily in urban areas where rainwater typically flows as runoff.
- By harvesting rooftop rainwater – In this method, the rainwater is collected from the roof of the building. This is a more cost-effective method.
With these stressful times we live in, it falls to us as planet Earth’s inhabitants to look for ways that we can conserve its resources and transform the way we live so that we do not put any more undue stress on the environment.
